Solar Panel Project

Mehlville School District Unveils Solar Panels

The Mehlville School District is now using the power of the sun to help heat, cool and electrify five buildings in the district.  Solar panels are now turning sunlight into energy on the roofs at Beasley Elementary, Bernard Middle, Oakville High School and the Witzel Learning Center.  Superintendent Dr. Eric Knost explains, "This solar project is such a positive return on investment for the District.  Without any out-of-pocket expenses, we begin saving money on our electric bill immediately.  By realizing an estimated $130,000 in energy savings over the next 20 years, we're not only being good stewards of our taxpayers' dollars, but good stewards of our environment, too."

StraightUp Solar installed and maintains 104 U.S. made solar panels (a 25-kilowatt system) on the roof of each building.  Each system will prevent the consumption of 3.3 million pounds of coal and 6.6 million pounds of Carbon Dioxide emissions over the course of the 20-year lease agreement.  The majority of solar installations last 30 or more years, meaning the District can choose to extend the lease and save even more money and resources in the future.

In addition to the cost savings and cleaner air, the solar panels will directly support Mehlville's curriculum at every grade-level.  A video kiosk has been set up in a common area of every school building so students can see exactly how much energy is being created on a daily basis.
